The famous Cowbridge Reindeer Parade was held as usual on the last Sunday in November. This year, unlike last year, the weather was good and crowds of people of all ages lined the High Street to enjoy the parade and the atmosphere.
The parade is funded and organised by the Cowbridge Chamber of Trade who this year added more elements, such as tractors and floats, to lengthen the parade and enhance the experience for everyone watching. The main attraction though is the real Father Christmas, pulled on his sleigh by real reindeer and accompanied by his Elves, bringing up the rear.
After addressing the crowd from the stage in front of Cowbridge Town Hall, Father Christmas disappeared into his Grotto where he spent the afternoon meeting lucky children who had earlier queued for tickets. As they waited their turn to see Father Christmas the children were entertained by Magician The Magnificent Johno and were looked after by the Elves.
The day finished with Santa and others switching on the Christmas Lights and triggering a firework display.
The parade was stewarded as usual by members of Llantwit Major & Cowbridge Lions plus family and friends and members of Cowbridge Rotary. Some 30 people in total who, as well as managing the crowds, were carrying collecting buckets in aid of Llantwit Major & Cowbridge Lions Club Charitable Trust Fund. Thanks to the generosity of those who attended £1600 was collected. This money will be allocated to local good causes including the Vale Big Wrap, which provides Christmas presents to children who would otherwise go without, Cowbridge Gateway Monday Club, Vale Food Bank, Barnardo’s, Samaritans and Cowbridge Rotary, who assisted with the collection.
It is not of course just about the money. It is a great event and is enjoyed by a great many people of all ages.
Lions would like to say a big thank you to all those who helped on the day.
